We are a diverse group of people who love God and one another. Our aim is to celebrate and worship the living God, making Jesus known through our actions and words and relying on the Holy Spirit for all we do. The church family is made up of people from new-born babies to those in their 90's and we come from all different backgrounds and different parts of the world.
Believer's baptism sets us apart from some other denominations in the world wide Christian church. We agree that as a person makes a decision to follow the risen Lord Jesus, they may follow in the footsteps and tradition of Baptists all over the world, to go through the waters of baptism and be baptised in the name of the Father, Son and Holy Spirit by full immersion.
For Baptists the concept of church family is important. In our family everybody is equal, for everybody has a part to play in the service of God, as the priesthood of all believers. Equality of status, however, does not mean that all have the same role.
We appoint our own leaders including ministers. Working alongside the Minister are also Deacons and Ministry Leaders, who all together form the leadership team. The work of the church relies on volunteers who strive to keep the building clean, ensure hospitality is a priority and make Jesus known in wonderfully various ways. At SBC we strive to live life together.
Spalding Baptist Church was founded in 1646, making it one of the oldest Baptist churches in the country. Its members suffered great hardship and persecution during the reign of Charles II, but, thankfully the next monarch James II, heralded a more tolerant attitude and in 1690 a small chapel was built at a cost of £83 on the site of the present building only to be burnt down 25 years later! It was immediately rebuilt at a cost of £137.18s.1d. As with most churches the size of the congregation grew and shrunk until eventually it prospered sufficiently to necessitate larger building. This in turn was demolished for a even larger building, the present church, in 1828. Over these centuries, SBC has sought to serve it's local community and demonstrate the love of Jesus. To this day, we aim to serve the Lord, through generous hospitality, a warm welcome, and sincere fellowship.
